Regional NSW towns like Dubbo are witnessing a spike in vehicle thefts, and a series of TikTok trends are seen as a driving force behind it, according to the state's chief crime statistician.
* Data reflects the 12 months to March 2023 when compared with the 12-month period from five years earlierOther than the Illawarra, which saw a 19 per cent decline, all other regions reported no statistically significant change in vehicle thefts since April 2018.Social media is a key contributor to the increase in vehicle thefts, according to BOCSAR executive director Jackie Fitzgerald, with TikTok reporting videos are being posted that encourage viewers to steal cars.
"The Police Commissioner has also called this out as a factor in terms of motivating young people to commit car theft," she said. On Sunday and Monday, seven teenagers were arrested in Dubbo and charged with various offences, including breaking into homes, stealing cars, and leading police on a chase.A police spokesperson said the teenagers ranged in age from 13 to 17 and were arrested as part of a special operation cracking down on property crime.
