JOHOR BARU: Malaysian-produced prawns are losing out to their Indonesian and Thai counterparts following their presence in the local market about two months back.
Malaysian Prawn Industry Association chairman Syed Omar Syed Jaafar said that this had affected more than 3,000 local prawn breeders throughout the country.
"Two months ago, local prawns were still being sold at a price of RM26 per kilogramme, but now the market price has dropped to RM15 per kilogramme. "Every year, we produce about 48,000 metric tonnes of prawns, with the local market demand only around 36,000 metric tonnes, and we even export it to the international market.
"At the same time, Malaysia's biosecurity law facilitates the entry of imported prawns to the extent that it affects local prices, causing entrepreneurs to suffer losses when operating costs are higher than the selling price," he said.
