JOHOR BARU July 6 — The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board said today it will introduce a new pineapple variety next month which can further increase the crop’s annual production to meet demand.
“We now have 16 pineapple varieties. This is excluding the new variety and four others such as the popular MD2, ND36, Josapine and Morris variants that are exported,” he said to reporters. Sheikh Umar said the board aims to export the country’s pineapple products amounting to RM1.3 billion this year, and is confident of surpassing last year’s figure of RM1.2 billion.“Among the countries that import our Malaysian pineapple products are the United Arab Emirates , Singapore, Egypt, China, Japan and Saudi Arabia,” he said, adding that he is confident that the target figure can be achieved based on the annual increase in pineapple exports after the Covid-19 pandemic.
