NSW motorists will be given better opportunity to dispute parking penalties with new legislation to ban ticketless fines.

Sneaky NSW councils will be banned from issuing ticketless parking fines in a major win for motorists who will be given greater opportunity to dispute penalties for parking illegally.

This can take the form of the penalty notice itself or a short description about the offence and notice that a fine will be sent to the driver. There will only be a limited number of parking zones where the requirement will not apply, such as in enclosed parking areas using licence recognition technology or national parks with limited mobile phone connectivity.

Finance Minister Courtney Houssos is set to legislate to ban ticketless parking fines after councils racked up $155 million in ticketless fines last year. Picture: NCA NewsWire / Damian Shaw “Frustration among drivers and community members about the ticketless parking system is high – and that’s fair enough,” she said.

NSW Premier Chris Minns applauded the move, saying, “Drivers deserve better than the current system.”“This system was introduced by the former government without enough protections for drivers. We’re fixing that.”
