In the quiet moments just before dawn, a group of people, some bearing shirts emblazoned with pictures of dead loved ones, gathered outside whirring buses near Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.

A dozen or so families headed to Austin Thursday as part of the Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice’s day at the Texas Legislature. The national nonprofit organization has held similar events in other cities and states, but in its Houston chapter’s first year, this is the first time victims in the region will have a chance to speak to legislators, according to Cylenthia Hoyrd, a volunteer with the group.

The event will provide an opportunity for the group to advocate for additional funding to help those who have lost a loved one or themselves become a victim of crime, Hoyrd said. And the long-term hope is to secure funding for a trauma recovery center, she said. But for those who lined up to board buses early Thursday morning, it was a chance to raise awareness and keep their loved ones’ memory alive. While united in grief, everyone who spoke to the Houston Chronicle had a slightly different reason they were headed to Austin.in connection with her death. And in the years since, Garcia has been frustrated at the slow pace of the trial as well as the fact that a judge released the accused on a low bond, she said.
