PETALING JAYA: The draw for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark, from May 16-24 has been deferred – sparking fears that the world team events may also be shelved due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Badminton World Federation said the postponement was “necessary” but gave an assurance that a new date would be decided in the next few days. Denmark is currently in a lockdown.
The 16 finalists will be divided into four teams in a group, where the winners and runners-up of each group will advance to the knockout round. For the Thomas Cup, seventh-seeded Malaysia led by world No. 10 Lee Zii Jia may be pitted against one of the top four seeds – Indonesia, Japan, China and Denmark. As for the Uber Cup, Malaysia spearheaded by Soniia Cheah can expect a tough time in their bid to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 10 years after missing the top eight seeding.
At the last edition in Bangkok, Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad campaign ended in the quarter-finals while the women failed to get past the group stage.
