Matt Malloy and Kristin Carey in Paradise
With the amount of content in the streaming era, it takes a lot for a show to stand out, especially when it's an original property. Limited series are more enticing for viewers who are crunched for time and overwhelmed by a long watchlist.
When shows have more than one season, word of mouth can play a big role in convincing viewers to tune in. One show in particular recently got an endorsement from the legendary Stephen King, author of popular stories like It, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Shining, to name a few. In a recent post on Threads, King praised Dan Fogelman's Paradise, saying: "PARADISE : First season is good, second season is even better. How rare is that? The acting is good, the story actually hangs together, and the dialogue is the best part. Sharp. Few cliches. Highest praise: Elmore Leonard would watch this." When it comes to ongoing TV shows, audiences can't help but compare the quality of the seasons, whether good or bad. A show can have an amazing first season, but there's a bit of worry that the second season could lose some of that magic. As King mentions, it's rare for a second season to top the first. Yet Paradise does that well by moving past its tense and claustrophobic setting, expanding the world without losing the show's sci-fi essence. What Is 'Paradise' About? Paradise follows Xavier Collins , a Secret Service agent investigating the murder of U.S. President Cal Bradford . The marketing for Season 1 made it seem like the series would just be a murder-mystery political thriller — but like his work on Crazy, Stupid, Love and This Is Us, Fogelman loves to throw in a great twist . Paradise's very first episode ends with the game-changing twist that the show is set in an underground bunker after the world experienced an apocalyptic event. This premise shares a similarity with King's novel, Under the Dome, which was later adapted into its own TV series; both follow characters forced to live in a setting with people who can't fully be trusted. It isn't the dome or bunker that's the problem; it's who the characters are stuck with. Given that King is best known for his horror and character-driven stories, it's no wonder that he's a vocal fan of Paradise. While the main plot deals with the murder mystery, the show also takes the time to make its characters compelling and relatable. Season 2 opens with completely new characters in a different setting, but viewers felt the emotional weight of the story from that episode alone, especially with a stellar lead performance from Shailene Woodley. While there are larger sci-fi and dystopian elements, the creative team grounds the story in themes of loss and found family. Posts By Meredith Loftus 'Paradise' Will Have You Hooked After One Episode Like his roadmap for This Is Us, Fogelman has confirmed he has a three-season plan for Paradise. Thankfully, that will come to fruition now that Paradise has officially been renewed for Season 3. The show is constantly evolving in a satisfying way, with Season 2 ramping up the stakes and diving deeper into the sci-fi elements that could change the show's identity once again. With the Season 2 finale left to air, it'll be interesting to see how it tees up the third, and presumably final, season of the series. While some shows unfortunately get canceled prematurely, Paradise is lucky to get the time to tell its full story. Considering how other streaming series take years to release new seasons, Paradise is one of the few shows that have been consistent with releasing a season every year — and it looks like the show will continue its streak, with filming of Season 3 set to begin soon. That makes now the perfect time to binge the sci-fi series that the King of Horror himself says is only getting better with each season.
