Ever ordered Uber Eats and have unexpected delays, or even worse, no food at all?

Ever ordered Uber Eats and expected the food to show up at your door on time but there were unexpected delays, or —even worse — no food to be found on your doorstep at all? It’s a common headache that many Uber Eats customers have endured and complained about, not to mention hastily seeking a refund.

Well, one state has pushed back on these annoyances, prompting Uber Eats and other delivery services to shake things up in 2026 with strict, new rules, per Beginning on Jan. 1, 2026, food delivery platforms, including Uber Eats, DoorDash and others, are now required to issue “full” cash refunds, instead of just in-app credits, when customers have an incorrect or missing order. Under the new law, the refund must include the price of the food, taxes and tips; The refund must be sent to the customer’s original payment method instead of in-app credit and a human customer service agent must be available for customers to speak to when a refund is requested. But if the food doesn’t show up at all or if the entire order is wrong, customers are guaranteed the option to receive a full refund. “Consumer advocates have long criticized food delivery platforms for relying on app credits instead of cash refunds, arguing that credits can expire, limit customer choice, and pressure users to continue using the same service after a negative experience. Supporters of AB 578 say the new requirements ensure customers are properly compensated when a delivery fails, without strings attached,” according to The new law stems from a bizarre experience Democratic Assemblywoman Rebecca Bauer-Kaha, who authorized the legislation, had, where she once ordered 12 pizzas for her daughter’s bat mitzvah, only to have just one pizza delivered, per The financial implication of the botched order she described during a committee hearing was staggering. “It was $220 they owed me. People are making it month-to-month right now. If you are keeping my $220 and not let me have that back, that could make a huge difference for someone.”EmilyAnn Jackman is a trending reporter for Penn Live.
