The Steelers could look to make Scott Tolzien their next offensive coordinator.

New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien gives instructions during their NFL football training camp in Metairie, La., Wednesday, July 30, 2025. staff out this week as they interview more candidates, but they have yet to hire an offensive coordinator to work under McCarthy.

McCarthy will call plays, but it is still a job that will draw interest. They will reportedly interview Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells. However, the team also put in a request to interview Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien. Tolzien was the Saints quarterbacks coach under Kellen Moore this past year, working closely with Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough. Before that, he was a quarterbacks coach under McCarthy in Dallas, and McCarthy has remained high on him throughout the years. When asked about the chance to interview for the Steelers job on Thursday, Tolzien acknowledged it was a great opportunity. “Anytime you get an opportunity to go interview for one of these that’s a really great growth opportunity. So I’m lucky that I’m in the position that I enjoy where I’m at. Things are going really good, and yet, you always see what’s out there. But my focus right now is on this game. Like it’s awesome being here with all these players and coaches, so you want to put your best foot forward with them and give it your best shot,” Tolzien said. McCarthy had a profound impact upon Tolzien’s career. Not only did he bring him up to the NFL level as a coach, but he coached Tolzien as a player in Green Bay for three seasons alongside Aaron Rodgers. That mentorship with Tolzien is something the Saints coach considers himself indebted to until this day. “He’s been incredible for my career, both as a player and a coach. So, I’ve learned a ton about how to approach a game plan, how to manage a team and everything in between. He’s gotten these jobs for a reason, and I’m super appreciative to have cross paths with him,” Tolzien said. If Tolzien were to be hired by the Steelers, there is a real chance he could be coaching Rodgers, who he considers a close friend, though he admits he has not thought much about being his coach. “I really haven’t put a whole lot of thought into that, but it’s super cool,” Tolzien said. “I mean, I have a ton of respect for, in my opinion, one of the greatest passers that’s played this game” Tolzien has become close throughout his coaching career with Doug Nussmeier, the Saints offensive coordinator. Doug is also the dad of Garrett Nussmeier, LSU quarterback and 2026 NFL Draft prospect. Throughout the week, Tolzien has worked with ‘Little Nuss’ Garrett while knowing his dad, Doug. Garrett says learning under Tolzien has been excellent. “It’s been awesome, just to get to spend more time with him and actually do football with him,” Garrett Nussmeier said. “It’s been a lot of fun. I’ve really enjoyed it.” Tolzien was an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin the 2011 NFL Draft and started as an analyst. He played at Wisconsin from 2006 to 2011, becoming the Second-Team All-Big 10 in his senior season with the Badgers. The Steelers have already retained quarterbacks coach Tom Arth, so Tolzien coming into the fold would bring the quarterback focus into heavy view for the Steelers as things continue to move forward.Nick Farabaugh is the Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer for PennLive.com, based in Pittsburgh.
