Fans packed Main Street in downtown Nome as they waited for Iditarod teams to finish the race.
ANCHORAGE , AK - During the Iditarod , thousands of visitors from around the world travel to Nome to see sled dog teams cross under the burled arch. “This is a dream come true to be here in Alaska now,” Kimone Watkis, who just moved to Nome from Florida, said.
On Tuesday evening, race fans packed Front Street, waiting for the announcement that Jessie Holmes, who was leading the race, has arrived in Nome. “We’ve been following him on the tracker so we could kind of see where he was at,” Angie Hamilton, a Chugiak resident, said. Hamilton was chanting ‘Jessie, Jessie,’ on repeat Tuesday night, as Holmes and his 12 dogs crossed the finish first — securing his second Iditarod win. “Everybody was like screaming and hooting and hollering, jockeying into position — even rushing the barricade — for the perfect picture,” Hamilton said. Holmes arrived underneath the burled arch just after 9 p.m. Tuesday. Holmes is only the third musher in the Iditarod’s history to repeat as champion one year after winning their first race. “Oh, it’s emotional. You’re so happy for him. He’s worked so hard and he loves those dogs so much,” George Ann, an Iditarod volunteer from Texas, said. The fans’ energy carried on into the early hours of Wednesday morning, as Travis Beals rolled into Nome just before 2 a.m. With over a dozen teams still on the trail, the excitement will continue for several days and nights on Front Street.Second driver killed by falling tree on same roadway in less than a yearChild kidnapped nearly 6 years ago from California found more than 2,500 miles away from homeSnow spreads over SE
