Kaitlyn Dever as Brynn in No One Will Save You.
Most alien invasion movies play out the exact same way. Some human beings are going about their lives, spaceships arrive, they blow things up, humans fight back, and save the day. The end. That's not always a bad thing, though.
There's something satisfying about those alien invasion tropes. However, one recent entry in the genre, 2023's No One Will Save You, starring Kaitlyn Dever, succeeds by being something more. Rather than providing another predictable plot of otherworldly beings, writer and director Brian Duffield shows the monsters, but he's telling a much different and more personal story, which makes No One Will Save You unlike anything else you've ever seen. 'No One Will Save You' Begins With an Alien Invasion Kaitlyn Dever is the star of No One Will Save You as Brynn Adams. In fact, she's about the only character in the entire movie that we spend more than a few seconds with. This is a story of isolation. Brynn, her mother having just passed away, lives alone in the large house she grew up in. No one ever visits because no one wants her around. Having caused great harm to her friend when she was a child, the townsfolk have shunned her. Brynn spends her days by herself constructing a highly detailed miniature town. Then the aliens show up. No One Will Save You isn't interested in being a sci-fi mystery with building moments of strange occurrences. No, it shows all in the first act as an alien breaks into Brynn's home. She manages to fight the creature off before heading into town. The people who hate her are there, but something has changed: they are now controlled by the invading aliens, who have put parasites in their throats. Seemingly the only one in her area who hasn't been transformed, Brynn flees home, boarding the place up like it's Night of the Living Dead, and gets ready to fight. When the aliens return, will she be ready? Related 10 Classic Sci-Fi Movies That Are Still Masterpieces Today The science may change, but the fiction is forever. Posts 5 By Ryan Heffernan Trauma is a major theme of horror, so for Brynn to be written as a struggling character with a dead friend and dead mom isn't exactly a revelation. What's intriguing is how Brynn is presented. This woman never speaks. She'll breathe heavily and scream when the moment calls for it, but there is nothing to say. To be put in a sci-fi horror movie nearly all by yourself and never speak a word is a near-impossible task to pull off, but Kaitlyn Dever does because of one trick. As she told Yahoo Entertainment: “The no dialogue aspect of it does free you up to go wherever you want to, in your mind, and I would even, for a lot of scenes, I would say things in my head and then hope that that phrase came through in my facial expression. I never felt like restrained. I never felt like I want to say something, but I can’t." Dever's hopes became a reality, as she says so much through a simple downturn of her mouth or scrunched up eyebrows. The story is being told through her facial features and body language, making No One Will Save You a film you must pay attention to. It demands to be studied and is not one that can be enjoyed if you're distracted on your phone at the same time. Kaitlyn Dever Delivers a Heartbreaking Character Study Where Aliens Happen to Show Up Brynn's lack of dialogue was not a gimmick that director Brian Duffield went into No One Will Save You with. In fact, it wasn't the plan at all. In an interview with People, he said: "I was about halfway and I realized she hadn't spoken. And at that point you're just kind of like, well, she's about to go back to her house and then there's no people in the rest of the movie." The lack of dialogue from Brynn isn't a trick. It's a result of who this character is. She's completely broken, completely alone, a woman stuck in the deep trauma of her mind, and with no way out because there's no one to talk to. Duffield explained to People: "Part of the terror of the movie is that Kaitlyn has to figure out what's going on by herself. No one will help her." Brynn's silence is realistic. The viewer needs to see how isolated she is. Imagine being at your lowest point, living a life of complete solitude and silence, when aliens literally land on your doorstep. No One Will Save You isn't one of those alien invasion-type movies where the audience sees TV news reports or meets government officials who can explain it all. We don't know what's happening elsewhere. Brynn's world is the only world, just as it is for her on a daily basis. No one can save Brynn except for herself. That's a theme for the on-surface plot of surviving little green men who want to put parasites in your throat and take over your mind. It's also the theme for Brynn's life, in this moment, and in the time before the aliens arrived. No one can help her get over the pain of losing her mom or of the tragedy she caused to her friend but her. It leads to a perfect ending that sums it all up in a way similar movies can't. Whether it's a happy ending or a sad one is up to interpretation. No One Will Save You is a scary alien movie with great special effects. It's terrifying in ways reminiscent of Signs. Yet, like Signs, the aliens are only a path to tell an entirely different story. It says so much by saying nothing at all. 8 10 No One Will Save You Like Follow Followed PG-13 Horror Sci-Fi Release Date September 22, 2023 Runtime 93 Minutes Director Brian Duffield Writers Brian Duffield Cast See All
