Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park.

For over three decades, Jurassic Park has been pivotal in shaping the role dinosaurs play in modern pop culture, not just as relics of prehistory. The acclaimed franchise began in 1990, when Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment bought the rights to Michael Crichton's novel Jurassic Park before it was published.

This led to the first film, directed by Spielberg and released in 1993, which was a critical and commercial success. Six sequels have since followed along with several animated spin-off projects, and the franchise has also inspired countless films and TV shows eager to replicate Jurassic Park's unique premise. Among those directly inspired by that influence is Primeval, the divisive British sci-fi series that was initially dismissed as a rip-off of Doctor Who before it even made it to the small screen. Created by Tim Haines and Adrian Hodges, Primeval ran for five seasons, originally broadcast from 2007 to 2011 on ITV and UKTV's Watch. The underrated drama essentially reimagines Jurassic Park's central idea, giving a weekly monster-of-the-week feel in which dinosaurs and other dangerous creatures repeatedly invade modern Britain through mysterious time anomalies. And while the films perfected dinosaur spectacle, they rarely had room to explore what happens when that kind of chaos becomes routine — which is exactly where Primeval thrives. Lucky for us, it is also now free to stream online! 'Primeval' Turns Dinosaurs into Weekly Chaos Primeval follows a small, government-appointed team of scientists and specialists tasked with investigating the appearance of temporal anomalies across the UK through which prehistoric and futuristic creatures, including dinosaurs, enter the present. This leads to the formation of the Anomaly Research Center , jointly run by the government and entrepreneurial scientist Philip Burton . At the center of Primeval is Professor Nick Cutter , an evolutionary zoologist whose expertise becomes crucial in identifying and neutralizing the predators suddenly roaming the streets. Although Cutter initially leads the group, leadership shifts as the series progresses, especially following his premature death, and characters rotate in and out with new ones introduced along the way. Over its five-season run, Primeval expands its scope beyond familiar prehistoric threats, particularly dinosaurs, which viewers have already encountered in Jurassic Park. The anomalies unleash creatures more terrifying than viewers might expect, from giant insects and marine reptiles to Ice Age predators, and even highly evolved future species that suggest humanity's eventual decline. Before airing on ITV, Primeval was originally intended for the BBC, but was rejected. However, that didn't stop the sci-fi gem from being well-received upon its debut. Season 1 was a hit with viewers, with the first episode watched by over 7 million, despite a lukewarm 67% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 2, on the other hand, wasn't as successful, but the series made up for it with Season 3, which critics described as one of the strongest chapters, featuring some of the best action sequences and original creature designs in the entire show. As for the final two seasons, Season 4 received mixed reviews, while Season 5 was a critical success during its initial broadcast on Watch before flopping on ITV. 'Primeval' Is the Perfect TV Replacement for Fans of 'Jurassic Park' There are many productions out thereinspired by Jurassic Park, and some fans may even consider a few of them better options than Primeval. However, what ultimately sets it apart is its long-form sci-fi approach, making dinosaur encounters recurring events instead of a single isolated incident. By repeatedly opening anomalies without warning, the series turns these creatures into a constant threat to society, placing them in everyday spaces like streets and residential areas rather than in controlled, isolated settings as seen in Jurassic Park. Instead of trapping dinosaurs in a controlled setting and hitting the reset button in the next sequel, Primeval drops them into everyday life again and again — and actually explores what that would do to society. Not to mention, across five seasons, viewers get to spend more time with flawed characters who evolve as the show's science and technology develop. There's also room to explore long-term consequences that the Jurassic Park films rarely had time to address. Related The Cult Classic Fantasy Influenced by 'Jurassic Park' Still Deserves a Remake It even spawned its own franchise with diminishing returns. Posts By Collier Jennings Critics have praised Primeval for its comprehensive story arc, tone, and choice of creatures, ultimately succeeding in becoming something unique in its own right, despite not having a perfect critical rating. Unfortunately, even with its satisfactory ratings, ITV cancelled the sci-fi drama after Season 3 due to financial issues. It was later revived through a UKTV co-production deal for Seasons 4 and 5, but was then cancelled for good following Season 5's disappointing ratings on ITV. For Jurassic Park fans craving more dinosaurs in the modern world, higher stakes over time, and a sci-fi series unafraid to take big swings, Primeval is well worth watching while it's readily accessible.
