When it comes to the greatest JRPGs of all time, Chrono Trigger more than deserves to be part of the conversation. This time-traveling Square Enix adventure remains an absolute classic, and a game whose influence is still felt more than three decades later.
In fact, Chrono Trigger isn't just one of the very best games by Square Enix, but one of the greatest games of all-time. Crono's temporal quest to save the world from absolute destruction is packed with twists, turns, and plenty of heart. This is how you make an unforgettable RPG. And after 31 years, one has to wonder exactly why we haven't had a remake yet, especially in this day and age. This Chrono Trigger Remake Is A Thing Of Beauty It's about time While there are rumors Chrono Trigger could finally be returning in a re-release, one fan actually took it upon themselves to make their own, or at least put together a concept of what such a remake could look like. YouTuber and 3D pixel artist Dott has envisioned a Chrono Trigger remake that takes heavy inspiration from Square Enix's HD-2D games like Octopath Traveler. The result is absolutely gorgeous to look at.This is an incredible example of how to keep the spirit of the original game alive while adding in dynamic new bells and whistles. The old-school charm of the original Chrono Trigger remains, but there's a touch of something new and fresh. I'd take something like this over a full-3D remake any day of the week, and it would seem most fans agree. "Someone please hire this guy to remaster Chrono Trigger," reads one comment under the video."Square would make all of the money with something like this!," adds another. Dott has also done a few Pokémon remake concepts in a very similar style, and their work is absolutely worth checking out. What I wouldn't give for more games to look exactly like this. Will We Ever Get An Official Chrono Trigger Remake? Time will tell While I'd love an official Chrono Trigger remake, Square Enix has yet to officially confirm such a game exists, although there have been rumblings. Earlier this year, leaker John Harker, who has historically accurately leaked info on various series like Assassin's Creed, said: "The Chrono stuff is already in dev tho. Let's ask for something else, like opening back up Triangle Strategy 2 or a legit sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics." There have been a few whispers of the return of Chrono Trigger in the past few years, though talk of a remaster or re-release has constantly been rumored since the JRPG was first ported to PS1 and then Nintendo DS. Other than a fairly straightforward Steam port in 2018, it's been slim pickings. Fans are, of course, already incredibly keen to speculate on what an official remake might look like. One fan wrote: "I've always felt that Squeenix will do an HD2D remake of this game. Would be a bit disappointed as the original SNES art still looks great and would something more in line with the pixel remasters." Clearly, Dott knows exactly what the people want in terms of aesthetic when it comes to a Chrono Trigger remake. So, naturally, expect the inevitable official remake to look more like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
