Jamie Foxx in a still from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe remains one of the most notorious examples of a franchise that failed to replicate the success of the MCU. Sony produced six movies in total, all of which earned poor reviews.

Only three made any sort of impression at the box office, while the remaining installments now rank among the worst superhero movies ever made. However, this wasn't Sony's first attempt at expanding the franchise. Only a little more than a decade ago, the studio tried something similar by introducing the Sinister Six, a super-group of villains that would've headlined their own individual projects later on. The experiment failed miserably and expensively, with the backdoor pilot project, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, disappointing both critics and crowds. Along with its predecessor, the film is currently available on Netflix. But both movies will leave the service very soon. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 brought back Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone from the previous film, which itself served as a reboot of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. Both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were directed by Marc Webb, but only the first film received positive reviews. Released in 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 holds a 51% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads,"While the cast is outstanding and the special effects are top-notch, the latest installment of the Spidey saga suffers from an unfocused narrative and an overabundance of characters." The movie received flak for doing too much table-setting for the future, and for featuring way too many characters. Here's How Much Time You Have Left to Watch 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' It remains the lowest-grossing Spider-Man film, making $716 million worldwide against a reported budget of up to $293 million. Following the film's disappointing performance, all plans for spin-offs and sequels were canceled, and the franchise was rebooted with Tom Holland in the lead role. Holland continues to play the fan-favorite superhero, and is set to reprise the role in this year's Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He last played the character in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which made nearly $2 billion worldwide, and featured Garfield and Maguire in supporting roles. Also featuring Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will leave Netflix on March 1.
