Sci-fi is a genre within filmmaking that has the ability to capture an audience and keep them glued to the TV when produced properly. Modern sci-fi offerings like Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies, Prime Video's Fallout, and the mind-bending Netflix series, 3 Body Problem, showcase the enduring appeal of the genre despite the passage of time.
One of the pillars establishing the foundation upon which these modern sci-fi stories have thrived is the critically acclaimed 1997 sci-fi series, Stargate SG-1. The series was a follow-up to the original 1994 film, Stargate, which is one of those films that seems to get more appreciation from its loyal fanbase with the passage of time. Despite mixed reviews, the movie was a hit, grossing $196 million USD on a $55 million budget. It has proven to be an enduring classic. The film was created by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin and was followed by the 1997 series, Stargate SG-1. The Stargate franchise might not be as popular as Star Wars or Star Trek, yet it's carved out its own place in science fiction history, and we are surely grateful for it. Now, the Stargate SG-1 series is establishing itself with a new audience. According to data obtained from FlixPatrol, the beloved series is making a mark for itself on the French streamer, M6+, as it surges on this surprising streaming platform. A sprawling franchise was born on the back of Stargate SG-1, and the series currently features in the Top 10 of M6+ alongside ABC's massive police procedural, The Rookie, and NCIS: Tony & Ziva, originally from Paramount+. Other familiar titles on the streaming platform include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Madam Secretary, and Medici: Masters of Florence. It is no surprise to find Stargate SG-1 featured on the M6+ streaming charts, as the sci-fi series has found itself on several platforms over the past decade. The series was first housed on Netflix before a transition to Prime Video in the aftermath of Amazon’s acquisition of MGM. Other networks to have showcased the iconic series include Showtime, Sci Fi Channel, and Sky1. 'Stargate' Birthed an Enduring Franchise The series was created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner and follows the titular SG-1 military team from Earth as they travel to distant planets using an alien portal. Part of their operations includes exploration of the galaxy and searching for alien technology and allies to defend Earth against other alien threats. The immense success of the sci-fi series saw the explosion of the franchise with spin-offs such as Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, and Stargate Origins coming along later. There was also the animated series Stargate Infinity, as well as direct-to-DVD films Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. Kurt Russell starred in the 1994 film, but did not return for the series and was replaced by Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O’Neill. Another major casting change was James Spader, who also didn't return, and was replaced by Michael Shanks, playing the intelligent Egyptologist, Daniel Jackson. The rest of the cast of Stargate SG-1 included Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Don S. Davis, Corin Nemec, Ben Browder, Beau Bridges, and Claudia Black, among many others. In lieu of a seemingly ever-expanding franchise, Prime Video is developing a new Stargate series, which is sure to gladden the hearts of Stargate SG-1 fans.
