Here’s what’s happening in Pomona: Mondo rides, deep-fried goodies, and all sorts of animals being super-cute.

Brunches, gardens, movies, museums, a pretty picnic at the park: There are a bouquet of ways to honor your mom May 10, including the chance to explore the Aquarium of the Pacific together, along with a meal at the Long Beach destination.

Free train rides for moms and grandmoms in Orange, complimentary admission to the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, and a hilltop luncheon at Tanaka Farms in Irvine are some of the other holiday ideas; May 10 is the final day of the season for theThere are few things that are as easy and breezy as a kite, which makes the colorful concept of a whole festival of kites a relaxing thought. Also relaxing?

That this May 9 gathering at LA State Historic Park is free to attend, and will have music, and a kite-making workshop, and cumbia dancing, and a homemade kite competition. Stop by to watch the sky scene and take Metro there if you want to skip parking. It's an afternoon affair, starting at 2 o'clock. Time-jumping from Union Station to Wilshire/La Cienega in under 20 minutes?

That's possible, beginning May 8, when the three Metro stations comprising the D Line Section 1 extension open. The kick-off is at 12:30 and special happenings, including music, will pop up at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega . There's fun afoot at Wilshire/Western, too, which has been the last westerly station on the D line for years... until now.

ArtCenter's South Campus, the one on Raymond Avenue in Pasadena, is known for welcoming big exhibits, big shows, and big ideas. Next up on the big-big-big front? This big art book extravaganza, which rolls from May 7 through 10. Some days are ticketed, Sunday is free, and you'll want to RSVP whenever you decide to attend.

Talks, exhibitors, food trucks, and all sorts of creative zazz-a-tude will reign in all sorts of prismatic and powerful ways.
