One candidate is spending hundreds-of-thousands of dollars to prop up an opponent. Another candidate bucked his party’s stance on Israel and made some anti-Semitic remarks in the process.

This is all happening in California’s newly drawn 40th congressional district, which includes portions of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, and the cities and communities of Yorba Linda, Chino Hills, Anaheim, Rancho Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo and Tustin. Normally, Republicans in California are pretty safe in the districts they were elected to, but Kim lost her La Habra base when her original district — the state’s 39th district — was redrawn last year. Adding to the problem is that,, the new 40th district is roughly six points friendlier to the GOP than the old 39th District, which helps the more conservative Raths against the more moderate Kim.
