For more than a month now, the streets of Metro Manila have remained virtually empty, save for a few workers who are part of essential services.

Before the enhanced community quarantine , the National Capital Region was a bustling metropolis. Vehicles and pedestrians crowded the roads as its population of more than 12 million scrambled to get to their destinations on time. Traffic jams were commonplace as were long lines to get on the MRT or LRT. Coupled with the smog and noise, these inconveniences were part and parcel of daily life.

The COVID-19 epidemic has forced the government to lockdown the nation’s capital region including the whole of Luzon island and other areas following suit. This has left several tourist areas and landmarks empty. Areas that were once crowded are now devoid of activity, at least until the lockdown is lifted.

With the general community quarantine poised to replace the lockdown, it remains to be seen if the quiet and slower pace will soon give way again to the old.Luneta Park in Manila on April 26, 2017 and now under the enhanced community quarantine .Plaza Miranda and Quiapo Church on July 23, 2019 and now under the ECQ.The Shrine of Andres Bonifacio beside the Manila City Hall on July 23, 2019 and now under the ECQ.The Binondo Church in Manila on January 27, 2014 and now under the ECQ.
