In Four Points this week: the loss to Melbourne highlighted areas of concern for the Bombers, who flattered to deceive against the Pies. Plus, Collingwood’s draft gamble looks like coming unstuck and Carlton must move to a one-ruck system.
Two things changed week on week for Essendon after their win over Collingwood that has now proven misleadingly encouraging. Both are troubling for them heading to September.
So while it worked, there was an element of risk. The upside was it shut Merrett down, Trent Rivers had his best game yet coming into the midfield to replace Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver was serviceable again. The concern about Wright, and it was a concern at Gold Coast, is that when things are not going his way or his form drops, he lacks competitive intent. He loses any physicality in his game and desire to hit the contest.
Jacob van Rooyen in the ruck was the physical presence that Harrison Petty hadn’t been, and that helped swing the momentum. You can understand the rationale of the double-ruck threat at the Bulldogs, who have the luxury of Sam Darcy being a forward who is also a genuine ruckman and not a part-timer. The Dogs have two elite players in that position – or Darcy is getting to that level very quickly. Carlton do not.“We’re still evolving as a footy team, there is nothing that’s set. We seem to be somewhat besotted by that conversation, is it one, is it two?” coach Michael Voss said.
