The show begins with Henrietta’s sister, Margaret, trying to coax her sister away from a morning of stargazing to join the family for church. But the two end up discussing a much bigger separation from the family. Henrietta has been offered a job with the Harvard Observatory as a calculator and she couldn’t be more thrilled. Margaret too has news, sharing that she’s been asked to marry and intends to do so.
But she’s not discouraged. Upon meeting one of the so called ‘real astronomers,’ Peter Shaw, she realizes that she’s smarter than him, impressing her new coworkers, Annie Cannon and Williamina Fleming. Henrietta dances with Peter after agreeing to a long-distance relationship.Director Kim Mason says she chose to bring this play to life at the Wetumpka Depot because of the way the show impacted her when she first saw it performed.
“Everything about the fact that it’s a very feminist play, I love Astronomy, and I love space,” said Taylor, “all of those things were just a perfect reason for me to want to be in this role.”
