Beyond him, characters like Mister Freeze and Poison Ivy stand out as incredible villains in their own right. From the Penguin to Ra's al Ghul, the Dark Knight has no shortage of iconic adversaries to clash with.
However, while the spotlight often shines on the most popular villains, lesser-known characters within Batman's world can still steal the show, and that's precisely what's happening now. The Ventriloquist, a villain once considered an A-list threat, is making a terrifying comeback. While he may not always dominate headlines like some of his more famous counterparts, the potential for criminal mastermind within the seemingly meek man, Arnold Wesker, is undeniable. The classic gangster personality, Scarface, speaks through a puppet, representing Wesker's darkest impulses. The Ventriloquist, once a recurring and significant figure in Gotham's criminal underworld, is back and deadlier than ever.\The current storyline begins with the release of a quiet, mysterious man from prison driven by revenge. Cyrus Mercer, an ex-elite soldier, attempted to sell a large sum of silver to crime boss Falcone. However, the Penguin, Two-Face, and the Ventriloquist all sought to intercept the transfer. While Penguin and Two-Face collaborated, the Ventriloquist opted for a more aggressive approach, leading to Mercer's capture and imprisonment. Blaming the Ventriloquist for his son's death, Mercer swore vengeance upon his release. Mercer's quest for revenge led him on a violent path targeting the Penguin's and Two-Face's men. Ironically, Wesker was released from Arkham Tower, seemingly cured of his mania and suffering amnesia. To protect him from Mercer's wrath, Batman placed Wesker under the care of his ally, Blair, and hid them in Gotham. In issue #28, Mercer finally discovered their location, and Two-Face and Penguin trapped the Ventriloquist to ensure he wouldn't escape. As Mercer arrived, Blair inspired Wesker to make a break for it. But it wasn't Blair, it was a hallucination of Scarface. When Batman checked on Wesker, he found Blair's dead body. She had been dead for a week, and the figure Wesker saw was not Blair, but the newest evolution of his delusion. Racing through the streets, the Scarface hallucination spoke in its signature accent, promising a dangerous surprise. This marked a terrifying transformation for the character.\Scarface has always been the embodiment of Arnold Wesker's darkest and most dangerous thoughts. His vulnerability, however, has always been the puppet; removing the puppet left the Ventriloquist helpless. The reliance on a physical doll was always his Achilles heel. However, this newest iteration of the character has changed everything. Scarface has gained a voice and a body that lives entirely inside Wesker's mind, making the villain untouchable. The Ventriloquist no longer has an easy weakness. Without the one sure method to shut down the criminal, the Ventriloquist is free to operate independently, unbound by his traditional limitations. He can fully commit to his villainous schemes without delay or fear of being silenced. The only way to stop the Ventriloquist now is the same way one would stop any other villain, and that makes him incredibly dangerous, perhaps even more so than Two-Face. The shift in his psychology and the nature of Scarface suggests a darker, more unhinged character than before, posing a significant threat to Batman and Gotham. The Ventriloquist is now a villain to be truly feared, his madness and evil unrestrained
