The former president will walk into a federal courthouse in Miami and become the first American head of state to face criminal charges from the government he once led.
. “Yes, he’s been a victim in the past. Yes, his adversaries have obsessively pursued him with phony claims. I have been at his side defending against them when he is a victim. But this is much different. He is not a victim here. He was totally wrong that he had the right to have those documents. Those documents are among the most sensitive secrets the country has.
John P. Fishwick, a former U.S. attorney, told The National Desk Friday, “This is the most significant federal criminal case in the history of our country.” Fishwick believes the Justice Department “thinks they have a strong case” and that “this is the most serious investigation and now charges that former President Trump now faces.
The following month, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the Records Administration’s discovery of the classified documents recovered from Trump. Shortly after, in March 2022, the FBI began its formal investigation, and, only weeks later, a federal grand jury began its inquisition. While the indictment alleges that Trump’s lawyers were eventually able to convince him of the need to return the documents, the former president secretly had Nauta remove 64 boxes of documents from the resort storage room where they were held – before his attorneys could review the entire stash for return to the National Archives. Thirty boxes were later returned to the room by Nauta for the attorneys’ review.
