V's body laid with roses and a lot of armed C4 in V for Vendetta

James McTeigue's V for Vendetta adaptation is still considered one of the best graphic novel adaptations of all-time some 20 years later, and the director knows the movie's true legacy. Based on David Lloyd and Alan Moore's 10-issue series, the film is set in a near-future version of the United Kingdom, in which a fascist totalitarian regime has taken over the country in the wake of various crises.

While the majority of the country lives under the harsh rule of the government party, known as the Norsefire political party, a vigilante simply known as V, donning a Guy Fawkes mask, enacts a series of anarchist attacks in the hopes of igniting a revolution, all while growing closer to Evey Hammond, a young woman who inadvertently becomes part of his plans. The Wachowskis, best known for their work creating The Matrix movies, penned the script for V for Vendetta, with franchise vet James McTeigue making his feature directorial debut on the film. Led by Natalie Portman as Evey and Hugo Weaving as V, while also starring Stephen Rhea, John Hurt and Roger Allam, the film was a general hit upon its initial release, grossing over $134 million worldwide against its reported $50 million production budget and garnering largely positive reviews for its visual styling and efforts to adapt its thought-provoking source material. Now, in honor of the film's 20th anniversary, Warner Bros. has given V for Vendetta a stunning new 4K Ultra-HD release, and ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns interviewed James McTeigue in honor of the new release. The filmmaker reflected on the film's legacy after two decades, his favorite things to discuss with fans about it, and what he thinks is the most important theme audiences should keep in mind going forward. V For Vendetta's True Legacy Is The Dangerous Cycle Of Government Control Even beyond their work on the Matrix films and V for Vendetta, the Wachowskis have been well known for mixing stylistic set pieces with commentary on everything from artificial intelligence to religion and capitalism. However, the 2008 film remains one of their most debated for its approach to Moore and Lloyd's source material, infamous for its celebration of anarchy in the face of fascism thanks to its titular vigilante, more romanticized in the movie. When asked about his favorite part to reflect upon whenever discussing the film, McTeigue warmly pointed to audiences who"really get the movie" and not only"get what it's about," but particularly understand"the timeliness of the ideas that are in" V for Vendetta. Looking back at its original release, the filmmaker expressed that one"could see the parallels to the society that we were living in," and even feels that those who see its theatrical re-release in November 2026 will"see that we're in another one of those cycles": Alan Moore and David Lloyd were in the middle of during the Thatcherite period when they wrote the graphic novel. When I made the film during the Bush administration, those themes were circular and cyclical in the way that they happen. And maybe if we're having — me and you, Grant — another discussion in 20 years, we might be in another one of those cycles like we are now. So yeah, it's remained timely and prescient all at the same time. While both the graphic novel and film are calls to action during said government cycles, they also represent the more extreme side of such action. V's vigilantism still echoes throughout modern society, with the Guy Fawkes mask being donned by everyone from the infamous computer hacking group Anonymous to those in protest against the Church of Scientology, the Egyptian government in 2011 and the various Occupy movements. When asked about the most important takeaways from V for Vendetta for modern audiences, McTeigue began by citing"the right of a free society or a free democracy is for you to have a voice." Chuckling as he confessed that V did so in a way that was a"murderous vendetta against anyone who'd ever done him wrong," the director still defended Weaving's character for putting out the"political idea" that the public must"change this government at a base level": I think that being able to have your voice in a political system is really important. I think that everyone has a voice, and everyone gets to vote, and that's a great thing. If you disagree with something, make a piece of art, write something, do something. And I think that's a little bit of what we were trying to do with V.V for Vendetta's 4K Ultra-HD re-release is available both on digital platforms and in stores! 21 8.2/10 8/10 V For Vendetta 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed R Action Thriller Science Fiction Release Date February 23, 2006 Runtime 132 minutes Director James McTeigue Writers Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski Producers Grant Hill, Joel Silver, Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski, Lorne Orleans Cast See All Executive Producer Ben Waisbren Studio Warner Bros.
