The city's many neighbourhoods have quite the backstory.
From Anderston to Ibrox, we're looking back at how these places got their names - and some are stranger than others. Many of these theories have been contested, but they sound pretty believable to us.
Gorbals Various suggestions are made to the origin of the name, with one that it could be related to to the Latin word 'garbale' . In old Cymro-Celtic, 'Per' denotes 'sweet fruit' while 'deq' could be translated as 'nice' or 'beautiful', giving the impressions that Partick was once a place of populated by fruit trees.Barlanark Barlanark is believed to be Cumbric in origin, with 'Bar' possbily relating to the Welsh 'baedd' meaning 'board' and 'lanark' related to the Welsh 'llanerc' meaning 'clearing in a wood'.
The name Strathbungo, which is pronounced as “Stra'bungo”, is thought to be a corruption of Strathmungo, after Glasgow's patron saint. Crossmyloof Crossmyloof was originally hyphenated as Cross-my-loof, which meant to 'cross my palm' with "loof" or "luif" being the old Scots word for palm of a hand. Shettleston The origins of the Shettleston aren't clear, with a Gaelic derivation suggesting it relates to 'the daughter of Seadna'.Polmadie From the Gaelic for 'pool' or rather 'burn' or "stream'.Bishopbriggs It comes from the Scots term 'Bishoprigs', referring to rigs or arable strips of land belonging to the Bishop of Glasgow.
