Even though Star Trek: Starfleet Academy had a lot of untapped potential, the Star Trek spinoff that took over ten long years to make ended up lasting only two months at Paramount. The Star Trek franchise has, it is fair to say, lasted a long, long time.

Since The Original Series debuted in 1966, Star Trek has released dozens of movies and shows, not to mention innumerable tie-in books, comics, novels, and other assorted pieces of media. As such, it is striking to see that, only four years after Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds were all airing simultaneously, every Star Trek show is now over. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's Premise Was Decades In The Making, But Lasted Just Over 2 Months What makes this particularly striking is the premature cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Originally announced as far back as 2023, this teen-centric Star Trek spinoff had been in development long before that. The O.C. alumni Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage were reported to be working on a YA Star Trek show back in 2018. Before that, the Starfleet Academy novels and comics from the 2010s seeded the ground for this eventual live-action series. The show was intended to be a fun look at the cadets of the eponymous Academy and their lives, balancing their teenage tribulations with the broader politics of the Federation in its 32nd-century setting. After over a decade of development, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy finally premiered on January 15, 2026. The show was met with superb reviews from critics, and, with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 87%, it was clear that Starfleet Academy had a great future ahead of it. As such, the March 2026 announcement that Starfleet Academy season 2 would be its final outing came as a shock. Did Starfleet Academy Do Its Premise Justice? Just over two months after the series began, this latest Star Trek spinoff was already over. To be clear, there is another ten-episode second season still to come, so the show will not finish airing entirely for a while yet. However, the show's back-to-back production means season 2 was finished before season 1 aired. This means the show's second outing won't address any issues from season 1. While Star Trek: Prodigy’s surprising decision to focus on teenage protagonists meant that Starfleet Academy’s approach wasn’t unheard of, the later show’s attempt to marry teen dramedy with the franchise’s familiar setting was stil a new, fresh approach. Critics certainly appreciated the show’s ambition, with reviews lauding its ability to feel like a compelling teen drama without ever sacrificing the atmosphere of the Star Trek franchise. With a superb cast and an engaging plot, Star Trek's latest spinoff, Starfleet Academy, was almost everything viewers could have wanted from the premise, which made the show’s sudden cancellation all the more inexplicable. 377 6.9/10 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Action & Adventure Drama Sci-Fi Release Date January 15, 2026 Network Paramount+ Showrunner Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau Directors Douglas Aarniokoski, Alex Kurtzman, Andi Armaganian, Larry Teng Writers Gaia Violo, Alex Taub, Jane Maggs, Tawny Newsome, Kirsten Beyer, Kiley Rossetter, Eric Anthony Glover 9 Images Close Cast See All
