Although Paramount had a new sci-fi show that could have lasted years on its hands, the network fumbled this blessing by canceling the series before the show could even establish a fan base. The sci-fi genre has plenty of major small screen releases on the way in 2026, from the cyberpunk sequel Blade Runner: 2099 to The Boys season 5.

With Apple TV’s adaptation of William Gibson’s Neuromancer and Prime Video’s The Expanse followup also on the way, there is no shortage of major upcoming releases in the genre. As such, it would be fair for fans to assume that Paramount would do everything possible to maximize their success in this space, but Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s cancellation proves otherwise. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Could, In Theory, Have Lasted Forever The cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy means that, for the first time since 2017, there are no new Star Trek shows or movies currently in production as of March 2026. This is a shocking development since, while every Star Trek spinoff has potential, Starfleet Academy’s unique premise means the show could have lasted forever if given a chance. Set in the 32nd century, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy followed the eponymous academy’s first class of new cadets as they trained to become Starfleet officers. Holly Hunter’s half-Lanthanide captain, Nahla Ake, was the class’s instructor, but her young cadets were the show’s true stars and its main focus. A blend of coming-of-age dramedy and sci-fi thrills, Starfleet Academy was the franchise’s first attempt to center on teenage protagonists. Thus, the Paramount show offered their love lives and hormone-addled rivalries as much plot focus as the larger political machinations of the Federation, offering a new balance akin to Star Trek: Prodigy’s kid-friendly story. Starfleet Academy Wasn't Given The Chance To Improve With Feedback Although critics loved Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, with the show’s first season earning a superb Rotten Tomatoes rating of 87%, Paramount inexplicably announced the show’s cancellation only two months after its premiere. Since season 2 has already been filmed, there will be another ten episodes for viewers to enjoy, but that sophomore outing will spell the show’s early end. The back-to-back production of seasons 1 and 2 means that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 has no opportunity for the series to incorporate fan feedback into season 2, meaning the show can’t grow and improve based on the audience’s reactions. Thus, what could have been Paramount’s biggest sci-fi show has become another victim of cancellation as Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ended too early. 361 6.9/10 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Action & Adventure Drama Sci-Fi Release Date January 15, 2026 Network Paramount+ Showrunner Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau Directors Douglas Aarniokoski, Alex Kurtzman, Andi Armaganian, Larry Teng Writers Gaia Violo, Alex Taub, Jane Maggs, Tawny Newsome, Kirsten Beyer, Kiley Rossetter, Eric Anthony Glover 9 Images Close Cast See All
