Meet the Renaissance-inspired painter behind this season’s buzziest print—his latest partnership with Ottolinger has garnered the attention of fans including Dua Lipa, SZA, and Barbie Ferreira.

earlier this month wearing a tight sheer tee that featured the print once again, answered by a flurry of questions asking where the top was from.

The mastermind behind the collaboration is Julien Nguyen, the Vietnamese-American artist who collaborated with Ottolinger on itscollection. Initially, Nguyen’s paintings might feel like an unexpected choice for a brand whose slinky, disheveled charm has enough visual interest going on anyway without the dense iconography of Nguyen’s paintings entering the mix.

Their friendship with Nguyen began during a trip the pair took to Los Angeles a few years back, with their first collaborative piece appearing in theircollection. “We always loved Julien’s sense of depth and architecture, and how three-dimensional he makes the figures, as well as that mystical, fantasy, fairytale element,” Gadient continues. “I think Julien’s paintings have a quality that is both beautiful and terrifying, and that’s something we like in our work too.

After inviting Nguyen to collaborate on this latest collection, he sent over a scan of a piece he initially made for the 2017 Whitney Biennial that was directly inspired by an early Renaissance panel painting of Jesus’s baptism by Piero della Francesca. “I picked something that I thought would be a good challenge, that was rich in color and rich in detail,” says Nguyen. “I was curious to see what they would come up with.

For Nguyen too the response has been a validating reminder that an audience outside of the art world’s rarefied bubble can find his work just as exciting. “It’s really lovely to see that, and it gives me some kind of confidence that what I’m working on can be legible to the outside world, which is something I think artists can have some difficulty with,” he says. “Especially with figurative painting, working in isolation in the studio, you wonder whether or not any of this means anything.
