Tropical Storm Debby could form in the eastern gulf this weekend and bringing heavy rain between Florida and Louisiana before heading inland.

The National Hurricane Center highlights a disturbance that may develop in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Chances are increasing that a developing tropical disturbance in the Caribbean will enter the eastern Gulf of Mexico, intensify and threaten areas along the coast, probably between Florida and Louisiana. Assuming this disturbance earns a name, it will become Tropical Storm Debby, and the system has the potential to produce serious amounts of rain along the eastern Gulf Coast.

Whatever the case, interests from Florida to Louisiana should remain abreast of forecasts and be ready to alter plans as more information becomes available in the days ahead. Moreover, the system also has a more pronounced spin. It’s broad, but evident — the first signs of more steady organization that will probably ensue into the weekend. The majority of computer models project that a named storm will form, and the National Hurricane Center says there is a 60 percent chance of development. In the short term, it all comes down to where a more concentrated lobe of spin forms within the disturbance’s broader envelope of spin.

The most likely zone of potential impact is between Tampa and New Orleans, but offering more specific details at this time is not possible. The impacts depend heavily on when landfall occurs. With a lack of steering currents, there’s a chance that any storm would sit in place for several days. But where would that happen?
