The laws vary by city and county, so it’s best to know the rules where you’re going, writes Amy Bentley.
to clarify the parking rules involving accessible parking spaces and electric vehicle chargers. Cantu emailed in a photo she took earlier this year in the Claremont public parking structure near the Packing House and Hotel Casa 425.
The photo shows a sole parking space designated for disabled drivers and the parking space also has an EV charging station in front of it. In the same area, Cantu said, there are disabled-designated parking spaces without charging stations and six EV charging spaces not designated for drivers with disabilities. Cantu asked if those designated spaces are only to be used if the two qualifiers are met, having a disabled person parking placard or plate and being hooked up for electrical charge? Or is only one qualifier OK?Here is what California Department of Motor Vehicles spokesperson Katarina Snow said. “To park in a space designated with the International Symbol of Access , customers must display a Disabled Person parking placard or DP license plates. Questions regarding the use of the electric vehicle charger should be referred to the local parking authority.” Considering the EV charging station issue varies by city or county, we ran this question by the city of Claremont for clarification about the rules there. Parking spaces like this in Claremont are intended for drivers in electric vehicles that have disabled placards too, city spokesperson Bevin Handel said. That being said, if all of the designated disabled parking spaces without EV charging stations are occupied, a disabled driver with a placard may park in that space with the EV charging machine without getting a ticket even if they are not using an electric vehicle or the charging station, Handel said. As the law surrounding the use of EV parking/charging spaces varies, we think drivers in other cities who encounter a parking space like this would be well-advised to know the law of their city before parking in such a space. Finally, from time to time we like to share reader comments and observations, and acknowledge their participation in On the Road. William Rimer of Murrieta shared an observation about car advertisers. While there isn’t much we can do about this issue, perhaps some drivers who read this will take Rimer’s comment as a cue to slow down and drive more carefully.California license plates aren’t getting their kicks on Route 66 “Many car commercials on television depict their cars as being fast,” he said. “They show them speeding, driving recklessly, making illegal maneuvers such as failing to signal for lane changes, turns, etc. I understand they are catering to people who want fast cars but therein lies the problem. Many young people buy these cars so they can go fast and end up in accidents that injure or kill people and/or destroy property. My wish is to have these manufacturers be more responsible in their advertising and maybe, just maybe there might be fewer people being injured or killed.” Do you commute to work in the Inland Empire? Spend a lot of time in your vehicle? Have questions about driving, freeways, toll roads or parking? If so, write or call On the Road and we’ll try to answer your questions.
