MLB The Show 26 represents the studio and game's first real year of stagnation and shows a need for an overhaul.
Sony San Diego’s MLB The Show franchise is, by and large, the best baseball game available, and has been for almost two decades. The game routinely represents the best presentation of the real-life sport for fans who want a game.
However, this year’s release of MLB The Show 26 represents the studio and game’s first real year of stagnation, and might be the first year where the game is showing signs of needing a desperate overhaul. The first thing you’ll notice when playing MLB The Show 26 is just how great the game manages to mimic the real-life sport of baseball. From the presentation to the way players move and react on the field, it’s no surprise that after 20+ years of this, San Diego Studios has gotten things down to a science. Gameplay itself is as simple as it can be, and the game doesn’t ever change things up the way franchises like Madden or NBA 2K do, to where you feel lost learning new mechanics. It’s simply just the best baseball simulation you can find, and it works in that regard. Where it starts to not work, though, is in how the game looks. Visually, MLB The Show 26 looks pretty much the exact same as it has since…almost the beginning of the PlayStation 4 era of the game’s history. There are some changes like jersey physics and player animations, but everywhere else, the game has seen no large improvements in any meaningful way. Player models, specifically those of created players, still look like something out of the PS4 era, and the crowd animations and looks are embarrassingly behind those of other modern-era sports games. In a game like MLB The Show, it’s hard to truly complain about “graphics.” The game’s primary function is to serve as a lifelike simulation for baseball, which it does. From further away, the game looks just as good as always. However, looking in at player’s faces or, when the game presents its “crowd cam” in between innings, the visuals are shockingly on display. In an era where hyperrealism is available in a litany of other sports games, MLB The Show’s shocking lack of it only serves as a glaring missing piece. Normally, MLB The Show is able to offset its mostly middle-of-the-road visuals by improving year-to-year in the gameplay department. Subtle but key changes have been the staple of the franchise, but this year that also feels like it’s been skipped over. There are a few new mechanics to play with this year. Bear Down Pitching is the biggest highlight, a new system that rewards good pitches by giving players a powerful pitch they can deploy in the clutch. The problem is that, while the system can be fun, the “big pitches” themselves never really feel any different. The only thing that changes in the moment is a slow-motion effect that does little to really add to any cinematic feel of any given at-bat. A new “Big Zone Hitting” feature is also available, adding in a new hitting mechanic that lets you pick from one of four quadrants to try and predict where the ball will land. It’s a fun enough system, but it doesn’t match up to the game’s already implemented zone hitting, which remains the most accurate and best method for actually feeling as if you’re being rewarded for learning how to hit. Some other changes, including the ability to toggle on and off the depth of field behind a pitcher, but that system has resulted in some stutters and lag that seem to be correlated to it, so it’s not a perfect system just yet. Similar to past years, the game’s Road to the Show mode has received a lot of love. The game mode has come a long way since being one of the most stale options in the game, and is now maybe one of the game’s best modes. This year, San Diego Studios has added 11 colleges to the game, and also has an officially licensed NCAA College World Series to play. As a whole, Road to the Show is a lot of fun, but it still pales in comparison to other sports games’ “create a player” mode. There is no real “story” to be found in it, and although the game has added some new functions to help speed your way through the minors, it doesn’t feel like there’s much to do in the mode besides playing through seasons and going through the motions. The game’s Franchise Mode has received a slight overhaul, but nothing too big. The game mode added a new centralized Trade Hub that consolidates all trade options into one place. It’s actually a fantastic change, and one that makes the mode feel much simpler and easier to navigate. Navigating trades and sending out offers was always a needlessly complicated thing in past games, so it’s good to see them fixed. Aside from that, though, the game mode is largely the same. To boot, San Diego Studios has also removed the game’s “March to October” mode, which offered a streamlined Franchise opportunity. As someone who liked the mode, it’s a big loss, and one that isn’t really covered up well by the more streamlined option made available. As always, the crown jewel of MLB The Show remains the game’s Diamond Dynasty mode. This year, thanks to the World Baseball Classic, content was plentiful to start. The game also remains the best “ultimate team” option of any game mode, particularly due to how easy it is to grind through for free-to-play players who don’t want to spend tons of money on in-game “Stubs,” the game’s currency. Unfortunately, Diamond Dynasty is largely where MLB The Show 26’s other glaring issue is found. The game mode is a fun one, specifically when playing with friends or against others online. However, to put it bluntly, online play in MLB The Show 26 is at best bad, and at worst downright unplayable. The game’s online issues have been a thing fans have been harping on for years now, so it’s shocking they remain largely unchanged throughout the years. Lag, stuttering, and freezing issues remain a constant issue. This year, the game launched with various network errors, causing several online games of mine to simply end abruptly. Stuff like this is particularly frustrating in a mode like Diamond Dynasty, where winning or losing is key to gaining rewards in the game.MLB The Show 26 represents all the best and worst the franchise has to offer. The game is still the best simulation baseball out there, and remains fun to play. However, the game’s stagnation visually and constant and consistent online issues really drag down an otherwise fun game. While past entries felt like something to look forward to, it now feels like MLB the Show is long overdue for a big change, and here’s hoping it comes next year.explains, a score of 7 equates to “Good.” A successful piece of entertainment that is worth checking out, but it may not appeal to everyone.Anthony Nash has been writing about games and the gaming industry for nearly a decade.
