NYC's Italian restaurants are bracing themselves for marathon runners loading up on carbs.
For many marathoners, carbo-loading – the process of increasing carb intake three to six days before a race – is a vital component of their strategy.
Amy Mascena, the general manager of Bevacco in Brooklyn Heights, said she’s not sure how huge crowds of runners find her restaurant every year. It’s nowhere near the starting line, the finish line, or the Javits Center Runner's Expo, where racers pick up their bibs and numbers. But they do, and she's learned to plan ahead.Mascena speculated that her seasonal patrons could be coming from the many hotels a half-mile away in Downtown Brooklyn.
Mocci and his wife opened the place 15 years ago, and he said he’s had carbo-loading pre-marathon crowds every year except for 2012, when the race was canceled in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
