Travelers today know Vail as a legendary, upscale ski town. But this famous Colorado destination has strong ties to the 10th Mountain Division, with troops training near the Vail Valley and deploying to fight alpine battles during World War II. After the war, veterans of the 10th Mountain Division returned to the states to teach ski lessons as well as open ski resorts, including Vail which made its debut in 1962 with nine runs and $5 lift tickets.
Margie’s Haas, the hotel’s signature restaurant, is a tribute to a World War II home cook who prepared meals for the alpine troops driving through the valley on their way to Denver. The restaurant, which opens Dec. 1, will serve contemporary alpine cuisine and tableside raclette in a cozy space with inviting farmhouse tables that have pops of metallic bronze and chandeliers with woven wool.
