This coming-of-age story follows three teenagers who escape the constraints of their suburban lives to build a makeshift home in the Ohio wilderness. Experience the magic of summer and the power of friendship through the captivating performances of Gabriel Basso, Nick Robinson, and Moisés Arias.
For kids, summer usually means freedom. No more tests, no more classrooms, and no more homework for the foreseeable future. The outdoors are calling, and in The Kings of Summer, three boys run away into the wild to escape the suppressive nature of their family and societal expectations to become wild. Starring a young Nick Robinson in one of his first big leading roles, he gives a vivacious performance as a youth in revolt.
Alongside Robinson, it features Gabriel Basso and The Boys's Erin Moriarty in some of their earliest roles, which showcased the talent both young actors already had. Basso is currently starring in the popular Netflix series, The Night Agent. Just releasing Season 2 this past month on the streamer, Basso is an icy, muscled action hero fighting bad guys in an exciting spy espionage thriller. He was miles away from that as a spirited, young kid in The Kings of Summer. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, it's an independent film made on a small budget and uses the natural world for most of its sets. A celebration of nature and the freedom that lies in it, the natural world brings these misfits out of their shells, with a captivating performance turned in by Basso. What Is 'The Kings of Summer' About? Joe Toy (Robinson) is being stifled at home by his strict, depressed single father, Frank, played by a deadpan Nick Offerman. Angsty and rebellious, he is best friends with a lonely, shy kid, Patrick (Basso). Patrick also finds himself in parents purgatory, with two overbearing parents played hilariously by Megan Mullally and Marc Evanston Jackson, who can't leave him alone for one second. Driven mad as the school year comes to an end, Joe hatches a plan to run away, and a desperate Patrick agrees. The school oddball, Biaggo, played by the scene-stealing Moisés Arias, also joins them, and together, the three of them build a makeshift home in the wilderness of Ohio, and in the process, begin to grow up. But things get complicated when Joe's crush, Kelly (Moriarty), arrives and creates a love triangle with him and Patrick that threatens everything.Gabriel Basso Gives a Sensitive Performance in ‘The Kings of Summer' Close The Kings of Summer is rooted in sincerity and friendship, and the bulk of that sincerity comes from Basso's sensitive performance. It's an all-encompassing character that involves comedy, romance, action, and drama all in one. What makes it the special, wondrous summer film it is, is Basso and Robinson's boyish chemistry, with the film rooted in the complicated, intimate friendship boys form in their teenage years. With Basso's big, sad eyes, constant biting of his lip, and hunched posture communicating that Patrick isn’t quite sure who he is yet, he tries to hide from the world and being seen. It's with Joe then, who encourages him to break free with him and build a new life away from the suburbs, that Patrick decides to finally be seen for who he is. Basso is often leaping throughout the wilderness, with the slouching and lip biting dissipating into an animalistic abandonment. He is the epitome of joy, and it's fun to watch as he and Robinson build their house brick by brick, embodying the curiosity and playfulness of being a kid. As a bonus, Basso gets to have the funniest scenes with comedy pros Mullally and Jackson as his parents. They’re the definition of the American dream, which in turn is Patrick’s nightmare. Basso plays Patrick as a quietly antsy, nervous kid who, in one good punch line, lifts his shirt to show Joe he’s gotten hives from his parents and the stress, and the stress of the suburbs itself. 'The Kings of Summer' Is a Peter Pan-Esque Summer Fable The Kings of Summer evolves into a modern rendition of Peter Pan, with both Patrick and Joe feeling misunderstood and isolated from their parents and the oppressive suburbs. Director Vogt-Roberts celebrates living in the moment and the liberation that comes with living off the land. He finds the beauty of a sunbeam hitting a leaf or the magic of the three kids standing in the rain, catching the droplets on their tongues. There are many stunning sequences Vogt-Roberts films, letting the actors breathe and embrace nature without dialogue or structure. Basso, Robinson, and Arias’s most enthralling scene comes when they use branches of wood to make a sort of warrior chant against a pipe in the forest, and it’s impressively done all in one take. Shot on location in the Ohio wilderness, all three kids capture the abandonment of being young and making magic out of anything, even a tree branch. Moriarty and Basso play out their romance sweetly, while it slowly breaks Joe's heart. The most emotionally charged scene comes towards the end, when Joe and Patrick fight over he
