The hidden meaning behind the world's fastest electric car:
But interestingly, at around the same time as VW was setting that new Nurburgring lap record, it was also cutting 4,000 non-production related jobs as part of a modernization plan while, at the same time, announcing a move to hire 2,000 IT-related staff with skills to support the switch to electrification.
So from my perspective at least, that Nurburgring lap time was not just a show of how fast its EV program is. It was also a symbolic gesture, to the industry and its global customers, that VW is serious about a move towards EVs. But while it might be adamant about taking its production towards electrification at an unprecedented rate, the Nurburgring experience showed just how critical heat management can be.
The bottom line for peak performance in an EV is micro-managing heat generation. As speed builds, so too does heat in the motors, inverters and batteries, a fact that leads to power loss. In comparison to an EV, the beauty of a hybrid is that is comes with an engine that acts as a generator to charge the batteries while supplying extra power.
In contrast to the ID.R, which was piloted by Frenchman Romain Dumas, the VW could only manage a top speed of 168 mph. The 919 meanwhile reached a maximum speed of 230 mph. This is a perfect example of the difference between hybrids and EVs and how a hybrid is able to deliver stronger top end performance while managing heat more effectively than an EV. In fact, as the ID.
American sprinter Carl Lewis posted a record-breaking time for the 100 meters of 9.86 seconds back in 1991 before Asafa Powell undercut him in 2006 with 9.74. But the mind-boggling time of 9.58 that Jamaican Usain Bolt achieved in 2009 rewrote the history books and showed what a human is capable of. The VW ID.R has just achieved the same thing. Its 6 minute 5 second lap time is not merely a faster time.
