Experts at a recent panel discussion in Davos discussed key trends shaping the future of AI, including the limitations of scaling laws, the rise of efficient and distributed models, and the growing need for professionals with specialized skills.
Now that generative AI and the work of neural networks and LLMs have become familiar concepts, the focus shifts to the future of the market and the driving forces behind the industry. A panel discussion at the IIA event in Davos in January explored these questions, featuring business representatives from Google, TCS, and other organizations, moderated by Daniela Rus, a colleague at the MIT CSAIL lab.
The experts discussed key trends in AI likely to influence its application in the coming years.Most panelists agreed that scaling laws remain relevant, despite reaching limitations in training data availability. Jack Hidary, CEO of SandboxAQ, pointed out that while training massive models requires vast amounts of data and significant financial investment, synthetic data generated from equations, sensors, or other sources presents a promising avenue for scaling without hitting data walls. However, there's a growing shift from transformer models towards alternative architectures for LLMs, aiming for increased distribution, decentralization, and the ability to run on edge devices. Mathias Lechner, CTO of Liquid AI, highlighted liquid networks, smaller and more resource-efficient constructs, emphasizing the cost savings associated with them. Carl Dean of Silo emphasized the importance of considering inference costs, the expense of operating models, stating that smaller, more efficient models can be more cost-effective compared to massive, resource-intensive ones. Peter Sarlin of Silo predicted increased efficiency and performance, while acknowledging the current focus on general-purpose AI assistance and specific use cases, with new modalities requiring attention.Jack Hidary discussed the need for professionals with specialized skills, combining AI expertise with disciplines like chemistry and biology, particularly in light of quantum computing's integration.
