The Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic shall pass, and we must start thinking about the era thereafter.
The second narrative suggests that the economy will permanently lose the production that didn’t take place during the lockdown, but will quickly return to its prepandemic baseline once social distancing is lifted. However, in his May 11 letter, President Cyril Ramaphosa wrote: “The transition to the next phase of the coronavirus response, that of recovery, will be more difficult than the current one.”
Whether we run or walk, whether we’re optimistic or pessimistic about the future all depends on the leadership at the front. The presidential prerogative to appoint and recall ministers needs a serious look, as we can’t afford recalls midway through terms of office. Our developmental potential has been lost as resources have been shifted away from creating value for the public to swelling the coffers of a select few.
Covid-19 has brought about the destruction of the economy. We must now collectively respond to how we will rebuild and reposition itWe must also admit that there has not been a radical rethinking of the economy and indicators of progress since the 1994 breakthrough. Over the years, we’ve been pushing the can and hoping for the best.
