The soft material filling the famous aerie’s bowl is the perfect cradle for Jackie and Shadow’s two eggs.
What fan of Jackie and Shadow, the celebrated Big Bear bald eagles, isn't keeping close track of the 2026 egg-laying season, which now has boasted as many twists, turns, surprises, gasps, and cheers as any densely plotted melodrama? Still, the bald eagles at the center of the drama are, as always, far more mellow than melodramatic: Even after losing their first two eggs in January to ravens, the famous Big Bear Lake bald eagles have gone about living in an exemplary, move-ahead way, as viewers observing the nest-close camera have seen.
Those same viewers also thrilled to the hoped-for-but-still-surprising arrival of a new egg on Feb. 24, the first of the season's second clutch, followed by a second egg on Feb. 27. But there has been a soft place of calm and respite for eagle enthusiasts to turn to whenever their nerves grow jangly and they want to focus on something fluffy: It's the snuggly center of the enormous aerie, which is located high in a Jeffery pine near the lovely lake. Well,"snuggly" may be a human term, but the plush bed of pine needles, grasses, and supple organic material the eagles have gathered from the forest floor and surrounding area certainly looks like a peaceful place for a period of dedicated egg-tending to take place. And watching that beautiful brooding, we most definitely are, and around the clock, too, via the nearby nest camera overseen by the nonprofit organization"More fluff please!" trumpeted a Friends of Big Bear Valley social media post on March 3. "That request has been heard and is being fulfilled by our two dedicated parents, Jackie and Shadow, as they have been busy the past couple of days making several large fluff deliveries.""Fluff, also known as soft nesting material, is used to line the egg cup/bowl and is where the eggs will remain safe, warm, and dry, protected from the elements, for the next 37-40 days." That is quite a stretch of time to wait, for sure, and some fans may fret about the eggs and every movement of the eagles, including when the busy birds periodically"step away" from the nest for short periods. Let us not worry, for we really and truly"trust the eagles" and their innate and instinctive rhythms. Putting our worries aside, let's instead be like the fluff at the center of the nest as we watch this gift from nature: Soft, a bit pliant, comfy, and not hard or unyielding like the sticks that add structure and soundness. In short: No amount of fussing or fretting on our part will make any eaglets from clutch #2 arrive faster: If tiny, fuzzy-headed chicks are waiting to eventually emerge, they'll begin arriving soon after, no fooling, April 1. Still, the promise that eaglets might show around an occasion known for prankish vibes isn't throwing us in the least: We're keeping the melodrama low and finding inspiration in the mellow egg-tending displayed by Jackie and Shadow, the two lovebirds — loveeagles? — now at home, or rather at nest, with their sweet second clutch.
