Beyond price and convenience, consumers are now being guided by a new standard when they purchase: conscious consumption. This shift is now past being a mere trend and has become a core motivation for many buyers, particularly when it comes to the treatment of animals.

According to a 2023 Merck study, animal welfare is “extremely or very important to 66% of consumers, and a 2023 study from FMI found transparency is “extremely important” to shoppers, with 74% saying that means providing “values-based information such as animal welfare.” This shift in behavior has inspired companies to provide an appropriate response: conscious capitalism.

“The use of gestation crates is not only inhumane, but also unnecessary,” explains Dr. Greg Douglas, former chief veterinarian and Vice President of Animal Care for Maple Leaf Foods, the largest meat company in Canada. “Pigs are intelligent, social animals that require space to move and interact. Extreme confinement leads to various health issues, including physical injuries and psychological stress.
