You may think that heart attack and cardiac arrest can be used interchangeably but they are in fact two very different things. Cardiac arrest, simply put, is a power outage inside your body. This immediately causes your heart to stop pumping.
This is very different from another cardiac event... a heart attack. "When we're talking about a heart attack we're dealing more with the circulation aspect. So the heart again is an organ, it's a muscle in the body and it needs blood and oxygen too. So if there is a blockage in those tubes, in the arteries that give the heart blood and oxygen, it will not be able to pump," said Ed Tadajweski, an Interventional Cardiologist with WellSpan.A heart attack is what can lead to cardiac arrest. "Those can include more muscle damage to the heart, which can really impact recovery long term. And the electrical part of the heart and the plumbing and the blood supply to the heart are really interchanged," said Tadajweski.A heart attack is a very serious situation but still often survivable. Cardiac arrest is catastrophic with far less time to act."Patients who've received hands only CPR do just as well as receiving CPR with rescue breaths as well," said Tadajweski.there are things on the homepage that really can direct us to CPR classes and we both do them virtually as well as in person," said Tadajweski.Knowledge of how to use AEDs is also lifesaving in addition to CPR. "The one thing that's really nice about AEDs are that they're really almost self-explanatory. The AED will actually talk to you and help explain how to use that," said Tadajweski. This post is sponsored by WellSpan Health.
