Jon Bernthal as the Punisher looking haggard in Daredevil Born Again season 1

After almost 60 years, the character who inspired The Punisher is finally getting his very own movie. On paper, he should be one of the easiest comic characters to adapt, but all three Punisher movies failed in their own right.

Dolph Lundgren's 1989 version has a cult following, but poor distribution doomed its chances as a franchise. The 2004 reboot was a modest hit, but star Thomas Jane bailed on a sequel. The final reboot Punisher: War Zone became Marvel's lowest-grossing movie in 2008, but despite its underperformance, it's a beloved B-movie now. The upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks the Punisher's first film in 18 years, though Jon Bernthal's Castle is very much a supporting player. The Punisher Was Inspired By The Executioner Novels It feels fitting that Spider-Man and the Punisher/Frank Castle will finally square off in a film, since the latter was introduced as a villain for Spidey. The vigilante made his debut with 1974's The Amazing Spider-Man #129, where a villain named the Jackal hires Frank to take down the webslinger. Despite his villainous origin, the Punisher proved popular enough to earn his own series. Of course, it was very unusual at the time to have a"hero" who killed, but that only served to make him unique within Marvel's superhero pantheon. Castle himself was created by Gerry Conway, who drew inspiration from Don Pendleton's The Executioner books. These hard-boiled action paperbacks followed Mack Bolan, a Vietnam vet turned vigilante who declares war on the mafia after a tragedy with his family. These novels began in 1969 and proved so popular that the series ran for over 400 titles, finally coming to a close in 2020. Conway loosely based Frank Castle on Bolan, who earned the nickname"The Executioner" for his skills as a sniper in Vietnam. Indeed, there are many comparison points between the two characters, including their service in 'Nam, use of guerrilla tactics, and creativity when it comes to weaponry. Of course, only The Punisher has the skull logo. The Executioner Is Finally Getting A Movie After Decades Of Failed Attempts Shane Black is best known for his screenplays for Lethal Weapon and directing the likes of Iron Man 3. Black was also a huge reader growing up, devouring pulpy novel series like Edge or the Parker books. His most recent film, Play Dirty, adapted the latter, while his next movie will finally bring The Executioner to the big screen. This will also reunite Black with legendary producer Shane Black . This wouldn't be the first time an Executioner movie has been mooted, however. Over the years, there have been many failed attempts, including a 1970s version that Steve McQueen was attached to. James Bond screenwriter Richard Maibaum was hired to pen this version. Burt Reynolds was said to be interested in the novels during the 1980s, while Bradley Cooper was attached to another Executioner adaptation around 2014. The most famous failed attempt involved Sylvester Stallone and martial arts legend Cynthia Rothrock, with Silver producing and William Friedkin directing. Creative disagreements between star, director and producer ended up killing that project, however. Jon Bernthal Would Be Perfect For The Executioner, But His Punisher Commitments Rule Him Out Even decades later, The Executioner holds major potential as a movie series. Black and Silver are an action dream team, and there's no shortage of source material. It feels like the actor best suited to play Mack Bolan in 2026 would be Jon Bernthal, which is pretty ironic, as his Punisher commitments rule that out. Bernthal is the perfect blend of likable and intense, while looking like he could handle himself in any fight. That's what The Executioner needs from its leading man, though given the pedigree behind the film, it should have no trouble attracting a name. After so many misses with 007, maybe this is the series Henry Cavill has been looking for.
