The alien race of human-looking Thermians stand together in shiny gray uniforms in Galaxy Quest.

Some movies start as a joke and somehow end up becoming the real thing. That is basically the magic trick Galaxy Quest pulls off. It spoofs sci-fi fandom, washed-up TV actors, and convention culture, but it does it with so much affection that it slowly transforms into a genuinely great space adventure in its own right.

The result is a movie that fans have loved for years, whether they came to it through Star Trek, comedy, or just pure word-of-mouth. That enduring favorite is heading to Paramount+ on April 1, where it will join the streamer’s new April movie lineup. It is one of the easiest recommendations in the bunch, especially for anyone who likes their sci-fi a little goofy, a little sweet, and a lot more clever than it first appears. Released in 1999, the film follows the cast of a beloved but long-cancelled space series who are accidentally mistaken for real heroes by a group of aliens. What sounds like a one-note premise quickly becomes something much richer, with the actors forced to step into the adventure they spent years pretending to live on television. That setup gives Galaxy Quest room to be hilarious, but also surprisingly sincere about fandom and why these stories matter. The cast includes Tim Allen as Jason Nesmith, Sigourney Weaver as Gwen DeMarco, Alan Rickman as Alexander Dane, Tony Shalhoub as Fred Kwan, Sam Rockwell as Guy Fleegman, Daryl Mitchell as Tommy Webber, and Enrico Colantoni as Mathesar. Related Remembering the Icons of Film — Collider Movie Quiz We pay tribute to the talents who helped define Hollywood. Posts By Macklen Makhloghi How Good Is 'Galaxy Quest'? The venerable Roger Ebert wrote that Galaxy Quest is one of the rare comedies that both mocks and genuinely understands its source material, delivering a film that works as both a parody and a loving tribute to sci-fi. Of course all of the cast members turn out to be able to command and operate the ship the aliens have built for them, since it works just like the one on TV. And they find themselves repeating their familiar roles. When the onboard computer speaks, Tawny Madison repeats the words. It’s not necessary, but: “That’s my one job on the show!” Like any actor, she’s not about to cut her lines. The movie’s humor works best when the illogic of the TV show gets in the way. There is on board, for example, a passageway blocked by alternating vertical and horizontal clappers that smash back and forth across the passageway. Negotiating it could be fatal. Why are they there? No reason. Just because they look good on TV.
