The Acolyte explores the Jedi's flawed approach to the dark side, revealing how their denial and deception might have contributed to Palpatine's success in almost eradicating them.
The Acolyte , Star Wars ' most controversial TV show to date, provides a compelling explanation for how Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious successfully deceived and nearly eradicated the Jedi Order. Despite significant backlash, even before its premiere, which ultimately led to its cancellation, The Acolyte offered several pivotal moments. Notably, it marked the first on-screen appearance of Darth Plagueis in Star Wars canon.
This cameo, coupled with some shocking decisions made by the Jedi in the show, may reveal Palpatine's master plan leading up to the prequel trilogy, where he almost completely wiped out the Jedi. One of the most shocking revelations in The Acolyte was the extent to which the Jedi of the High Republic era were flawed, mirroring the prequel trilogy era Jedi. This was most evident with Master Sol, who chose to kill Mother Aniseya and blame Mae for the deaths of the Witches of Brendok to save Osha and Mae. He further deceived Osha, making her believe Mae was responsible for the atrocities. Adding to the disappointment, Vernestra Rwoh, another Jedi, proved to be equally deceitful as Master Sol. While she didn't kill anyone, she fabricated a story that painted Sol as entirely responsible for the events, concealing the rise of the dark side. The larger issue with this plot, besides Vern keeping the truth from the Senate and the Jedi, is that she actively chose to conceal the growing dark side. Vernestra, despite sensing the dark side in her former Padawan, Qimir, on Brendok, opted to bury the truth and protect the Jedi Order from the reality of the situation. This mirrors the Jedi's approach in the prequel trilogy, where they repeatedly ignored warning signs and refused to accept the return of the Sith. The Jedi Council, for instance, refused to believe Count Dooku orchestrated the attack on Padmé despite her belief and ignored numerous signs of Palpatine's growing power and potential Sith affiliation. The Acolyte, through its portrayal of the Jedi, suggests a recurring pattern of denial and deception in the face of the dark side, ultimately contributing to their downfall
