Speaking with, Doug Drexler, who was working as a junior illustrator on concepts for the USS Voyager, explained that ahead of a meeting where the executives were going to assess the design of the Voyager, he was given half an hour to come up with some alternatives, specifically to give them “something to hate.” However, they actually liked one of Drexler’s designs, and he then “found out that those sketches threw a monkey wrench into the whole thing and that they wanted to develop one of them.”Operating on such a short time scale, Drexler drew inspiration from a model of Uncle Martin’s spaceship from the 1963 sitcomhe had on his desk, coming up with a much sleeker design than those the Star Trek franchise had used before. It was this that inspired the bold, streamlined designs that ultimately shaped the Voyager’s final look.
