Savannah Nicole Valdez, of Katy, has been convicted of animal smuggling related crime twice since 2022.

After serving time for trying to sneak a spider monkey into the country, a Katy woman was arrested again after using her family to sell another spider monkey and some toucans to federal investigators. A federal judge sentenced Savannah Nicole Valdez, 21, to 16 months in prison Monday after she pleaded guilty to smuggling spider monkeys into the country and selling them in the Houston area, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Monday's sentencing was related to a charge for selling wildlife in violation of underlying federal law in October 2023, court documents show. In March 2022, Valdez was caught near the U.S.-Mexico border, days after running from an immigration checkpoint with a monkey in her car.
