Close losses to Baylor and Kansas to end the season showed the Longhorns that they were...

Texas forward Christian Bishop tries to block a shot by Kansas guard Ochai Agbaji during the Longhorns’ overtime loss to the Jayhawks on Saturday.KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Last Monday, Texas tried to deliver a grand finale in the last men’s basketball game at the 45-year-old Erwin Center. Nearly pulled it off, too, before co-Big 12 champion Baylor and its backcourt jackrabbits ran the Longhorns ragged in the closing six minutes of a 68-61 win.

Despite closing with two straight losses, No. 22 Texas still surfaced from the Big 12 anarchy with a No. 4 seed for this week’s conference tournament at the T-Mobile Center. Kansas nabbed the top seed over No. 2 seed Baylor, with No. 3 seed Texas Tech just a rung below those co-favorites. But Beard still thinks there’s another gear or two for the defending Big 12 tournament champion Longhorns to hit. Especially when it comes to closing out elite competition.

Texas swept TCU this season, winning by 23 in Fort Worth and by nine in Austin. Sixth-year guard Andrew Jones scored a combined 32 points and All-Big 12 second team forward Timmy Allen averaged 16.5 points on 50 percent shooting, 7.5 rebounds and two assists in those victories.
