Janae Jefferson provided some season-saving heroics Friday night to help Texas beat...
The walls were closing in on the Longhorns Friday night, and unless someone did something heroic in Game 2 of the NCAA tournament Fayetteville super regional, one season and several Texas softball careers were going to reach a painful ending inside Bogle Park.
Arkansas had just taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the third and Texas starter Hailey Dolcini was facing a real bind with runners on the corners and third baseman Hannah Gammill getting a piece of everything she threw. On the 15th pitch of that at-bat, Gammill scorched a grounder back to second. “It was a hard shot, I literally just reacted to the ball and caught it,” Jefferson said during the post-game press conference. “I feel like it kind of sucked the energy out of the whole stadium, which we needed. So in a turn of events, we went back on offense and Katie got us going with that solo shot. And I did the same thing with a pitch down the middle, just took advantage of it and took it out.
Delce limited any further damage, but with the way Dolcini was pitching Texas’ three-run burst was enough to stave off elimination.
