Michael Lewis, a 55-year-old man from Texas, was arrested for stalking WNBA star Caitlin Clark after repeatedly posting about her on social media, including claiming to drive past her house multiple times a day.
A Texas man accused of stalking WNBA player Caitlin Clark was arrested after posting on social media that he traveled to Indianapolis and was driving past her house multiple times a day. 55-year-old Michael Lewis , whose X profile shows over 100 tweets aimed at Clark between this past Saturday and Sunday alone, was arrested Sunday and charged with stalking, according to Marion County jail records. He faces a maximum sentence of six years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
The probable cause affidavit says Lewis tagged Clark over and over in tweets between Dec. 16 to Jan. 2, making sexually explicit comments about the Indiana Fever guard and saying he wanted to come watch her games. Some of the tweets the affidavit highlights: 'They said I was sending threatening texts..but the only though (sic) on my mind was….CAITLIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNN' 'We are coming to u live from downtown indy and we have a special guest named Michael on vacation from Texas' 'Been driving around your house 3x a day..but don’t call the law just yet' On Wednesday, officers went to a hotel where Lewis was staying in Indianapolis for a welfare check, the affidavit said. Investigators asked why he posted so often about Clark, and he told them, 'just the same reason everybody makes posts.' Officers told Lewis to stop making posts that could be perceived as threatening, and Lewis responded by saying his interactions with Clark were 'an imagination, fantasy type thing and it’s a joke.' After receiving a report Friday that Lewis was engaging in possible stalking behavior with the repeated X posts, the Marion County Sheriff's Office requested information from the social media site and verified that Lewis was the one behind the account. The disclosure from X also showed some of his posts were made from IP addresses at a downtown Indianapolis hotel and the Indianapolis Public Library, the affidavit said. Investigators spoke Saturday with Clark, who said she had shifted her public appearances and changed her routines in fear for her safety. She does not know Lewis and never responded to any of his posts, according to the affidavit. The same day, Lewis tagged the WNBA star in over 50 posts on X. Then on Sunday, he tagged her in about 60 more posts before getting arrested.
