Incumbent Republican Angie Chen Button faces Democrat challenger Averie Bishop.
Serving since 2009, Angie Chen Button is a veteran of the Texas Legislature. Her experience and ability to pass well-crafted bills have earned her our recommendation for this district spanning parts of Garland, Richardson, Rowlett, Sachse and Dallas.
Last year, Button, 70, voted to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton. Like many others who looked at the facts and made the right call,Now she is facing Democratic challenger Averie Bishop, 28, a newcomer who is nonetheless bringing strong competition. We expect she will fare much better in this election than Button’s opponent did in the primary.
As far as increasing funding, Button favors raising the basic allotment, currently set at roughly $6,100 per student. She said the exact amount it should be raised by depends on the details. On education savings accounts or vouchers, Button said in the Voter Guide that she would support a proposal that doesn’t use dollars allocated to public education, an approach we think is wise, if any limited-scope voucher proposal should pass next year.
Bishop presented well-thought-out policy ideas about increasing the affordable housing supply. She favors restoring the Roe vs. Wade standard of abortion access and wants to increase funding for education. Regarding border policy, however, she showed a very weak grasp.Dallas Morning News editorials are written by the paper's Editorial Board and serve as the voice and view of the paper.
