We recommend former Coppell mayor pro tem John Jun.

Two qualified candidates are contending for the District 115 seat in the Texas House of Representatives being vacated by Democratic Rep. Julie Johnson, who is running for Congress. Both Republican John Jun and Democrat Cassandra Garcia Hernandez are lawyers well versed in the most urgent issues likely to face the Legislature next year.

But Jun, a Navy veteran, has deeper roots in the district of about 200,000, which includes portions of Farmers Branch, Carrollton, Irving, Addison and Dallas. He also has a stronger record of public service and community involvement than his opponent. He edges out Garcia Hernandez for our recommendation. In addition to spanning several cities, the district includes six public school districts: Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Coppell, Dallas, Grapevine-Colleyville, Irving and Richardson.

“It seems with the growth of social media and sensational cable opinion shows, those views get amplified while there are those who do not seek media appearances and simply roll up their sleeves and work on sensible solutions that deliver for the people,” he wrote in our Voter Guide. “I have always worked to develop positive relationships and would pursue solutions that bring people together.”One such issue would be school vouchers.

Garcia Hernandez, 38, is savvy about the legislative process and passionate in her opposition to Texas’ abortion ban and school vouchers. If elected, she said she’d also work to pass commonsense gun restrictions, such as a red flag law and an increase in the minimum age to purchase a semiautomatic rifle to 21.

We agree with Garcia Hernandez on such gun restrictions. But we were concerned in our interview that she couldn’t articulate a clear point in pregnancy that she believed an abortion should be illegal. We also note that she is relatively new to District 115, having previously run for the District 70 seat in 2022. Jun, with his close connections to this district, gets our nod.Dallas Morning News editorials are written by the paper's Editorial Board and serve as the voice and view of the paper.
