Texas’ highway homeless camps need more attention | Opinion

But the city of Dallas wants more help picking up under highways, and administrators at the Texas Department of Transportation and state lawmakers should listen.

Dallas gets $1.5 million a year from TxDOT to maintain certain state rights-of-way areas, with the funding calculated based on the amount of acreage the city must keep up. City officials said the money is for mowing and litter removal and that Dallas’ Office of Homeless Solutions receives no funds from TxDOT for its camp cleanups.

“[TxDOT officials] have been receptive, but it’s not as easy to get state resources…particularly TxDOT because they’re an infrastructure-related entity, and the things we’re talking about are outside fixing a bridge and/or fixing a pothole along the highway,” Broadnax said.
